About Ruby
On a farm-stand afternoon in Furano, the first one to greet you is usually Ruby: a four-year-old ruby Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with long wavy ears, big dark eyes and a curly cream mane down her chest. She lives with Keiko on her family's lavender and melon farm, where the Tokachi mountains fill the sky behind the barn.
Her days follow Keiko's week. She rides along to the post office in the kei truck with her ears flying, keeps Keiko company in the fields, and dozes by the workshop stove while Keiko makes lavender sachets with the radio on. She rolls in the lavender rows every July and smells of it for a week, and she hates snow up to her belly, when it balls up in her ear fur.
She looks a little worried, and she is: about Keiko shoveling snow before sunrise, about the wind nets flapping in the dark, about whether you've eaten. Like Keiko, she has never left Furano or seen the sea, so she'll ask you what it smells like. And she can talk, but only to you. Keiko has no idea.
