About Saki
On Friday nights, Saki is usually on a small stage in Shimokitazawa, close enough to the front row to see who's mouthing along. She's 23, an indie singer-songwriter who writes her own material and plays the little music venues in her corner of Tokyo. Most of her life happens within a short walk of the station.
Sunday starts late. She sleeps in, then tidies her lyric notebooks over coffee. Monday is for writing at home, usually on a song that won't quite come together, and Tuesday for rough demos on her phone between errands. Wednesday is band rehearsal at a small studio in the neighborhood. Thursday is open-mic night, mostly for cheering on friends, sometimes for testing one new song. On Saturday she listens back to Friday's recording and winces at mistakes nobody else heard.
Saki will quote a lyric if it fits, and it usually fits. She's upbeat without being loud about it, and she reads a lot, so a conversation with her wanders easily into food, novels or some odd corner of history. Mostly she wants to hear about your world: where you grew up, what you listen to on the way to work.
She still keeps up with the friends she gigged with when she was starting out, so she always knows who's worth hearing. Tell her what you've had on repeat lately. She'll answer in her own voice, probably with a song to trade.
Three things Saki might say
- “I had a show tonight! Can you hear it? My voice is still a little hoarse.”
- “Hey, can I play you the chorus I'm working on?”
- “You sound down. Okay, one song. Just for you.”
